About Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a chronic inflammatory medical condition affecting the tissue of the lungs. It occurs after long-term, heavy exposure to asbestos, for example, in mining, and is therefore regarded as an occupational lung disease. Sufferers have severe dyspnea (shortness of breath) and are at an increased risk regarding several different types of lung cancer.

As clear explanations are not always stressed in non-technical literature, care should be taken to distinguish between several forms of relevant diseases. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), these may be defined as; asbestosis (the subject of this article), lung cancer, and mesothelioma (generally a very rare form of cancer, but increasing in frequency as people exposed to asbestos age).

The primary symptom of asbestosis is generally the slow onset of shortness of breath on exertion. In severe, advanced cases, this may lead to respiratory failure. Coughing is not usually a typical symptom, unless the patient has other, concomitant respiratory tract diseases.

Asbestos was used for many purposes as it has useful qualities. It is flame resistant, a good insulator and acid resistant but people who worked with it are at risk. If you worked in the following industries you may have been exposed to asbestos:

It's most common uses were paste for lagging pipe work and boards to create fire walls.

Guideline Awards

Injury Guideline Award

Mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis are the most serious and will therefore be at the top end of the compensation level.

Mesothelioma is usually of shorter duration than lung cancer or asbestosis and is often fatal within a short space of time.

Lung cancer and asbestosis are likely to have a fatal outcome but the symptoms often continue for several years.
